B2B prospecting
How to scope a B2B outreach agency engagement
An outreach engagement should specify audience planning, data sourcing, validation limits, copy, infrastructure, sending, reply ownership, qualification, and reporting. Separate outbound from subscriber marketing explicitly.

Ambiguous scope can leave the most important reply work unowned.
Define the audience process
Record fit criteria, source standards, exclusions, and review responsibilities.
Define execution
Specify who configures, approves, sends, monitors, and maintains preferences.
Define outcomes
Distinguish contact records, replies, positive replies, meetings, and qualified opportunities.
A practical example
A fictional proposal includes audience research and sending but names the business owner as the person who handles substantive replies. The handoff expectations are documented.
A decision checkpoint
Define who maintains exclusions when the engagement ends. The business needs continuity of preferences and active conversations, not just a final export of contacted addresses. Include suppression, reply records, documentation, and appropriate account access in the handoff scope.
A mistake to avoid
A promise of “leads” without a definition is difficult to evaluate.
How to assess the result
Review work against agreed scope and assess actual qualification and recipient feedback.
Put the work in context
B2B prospecting starts with a relevant business audience and a legitimate reason to contact it. Public availability of an address does not establish newsletter permission, legal eligibility in every jurisdiction, or acceptance under a sending provider’s policies.
Before sending, review applicable laws and provider rules, use accurate identity and required disclosures, and maintain a reliable opt-out and suppression process. This content explains planning and operations; jurisdiction-specific requirements need separate assessment.
A common question
Should agencies guarantee meetings?
Assess any promise critically against definitions and controllable work; external recipient decisions cannot be guaranteed reliably.
