Email deliverability
One-click unsubscribe versus an email footer link
Header-based one-click unsubscribe and a visible body link are different mechanisms. Implement the requirements applicable to your sending category using provider guidance, and test that preferences are honored across systems.

A footer link alone may not satisfy a provider’s header requirements.
Check applicability
Review current sender rules for your audience and sending volume.
Use supported implementation
Configure the platform’s appropriate headers and body options instead of inventing a fragile custom flow.
Test the result
Verify the action, suppression propagation, and later campaign exclusion.
A practical example
A fictional newsletter test confirms that a header unsubscribe and the body route both update the intended preference state without requiring an account login.
A decision checkpoint
Test preferences from the actual received message where possible. A working unsubscribe page does not prove the required headers are present or correctly signed. Also verify that the resulting status reaches future campaign selection, because the visible action and operational suppression are separate steps.
A mistake to avoid
A working page is insufficient if the next import reactivates the contact.
How to assess the result
Audit processing and inappropriate sends after preference changes.
Put the work in context
Deliverability concerns whether appropriate messages reach recipients successfully and are treated as wanted. Authentication, accurate identity, audience expectations, preference handling, and recipient response work together.
Use your provider’s current configuration instructions and test real message headers. Do not copy arbitrary DNS records or treat authentication as permission to send unwanted messages. Investigate evidence before changing infrastructure.
A common question
Are a mailto link and RFC 8058 one-click identical?
No. They are different mechanisms with different technical behavior.
