Question-based headings: when they help business content

Question-based headings help when the section genuinely answers a question readers ask. Use them selectively alongside descriptive headings rather than forcing every section into a repetitive question format.

Three points to consider: Real question, Matching section, Clear hierarchy.

The heading should accurately forecast the answer that follows.

Collect real questions

Use customer wording and observed needs. Avoid invented questions that exist only to repeat keywords.

Match scope

Give the section enough detail to answer the heading. Split materially different decisions where needed.

Use a readable hierarchy

Organize major questions and supporting details without skipping semantic levels for visual styling.

A practical example

A fictional service guide uses “What should we prepare?” above a checklist and “Assessment process” above the workflow. Both heading forms fit their content.

A decision checkpoint

Check that the question’s promise matches the section’s depth. A heading asking “How do I choose?” needs decision criteria, not another definition. If the answer is only a short clarification, use a narrower question rather than promising a comprehensive process the section does not deliver.

A mistake to avoid

Adding question marks to vague headings does not improve the underlying answer.

How to assess the result

Review scanning, section accuracy, and whether readers can locate the information they need.

Put the work in context

Answer engine optimization is a useful label for making answers clear and supportable, but it does not create a separate entitlement to visibility. Prioritize the reader’s question, accessible content, and accurate evidence.

Keep essential explanations in live page text. Use headings, examples, and tables when they improve understanding, and make structured data describe the visible page rather than adding claims that readers cannot verify.

A common question

Should every H2 be a question for AEO?

No. Choose the clearest label for the section and its reader task.
