Generative search visibility
How to check whether AI search cites your website
Track AI search citations by recording relevant queries, the search product, observation date, cited URL, and answer context. Combine manual samples with available platform reporting, while distinguishing citation exposure from actual visits.

A single favorable prompt is not a representative performance measure.
Choose realistic questions
Use genuine buyer tasks and consistent phrasing. Include questions where your content has a plausible role.
Record the observation
Capture which page is cited and whether the answer accurately represents it. Note context that may change results.
Connect later behavior
Review measurable referrals and inquiry quality separately. Some citations may produce no click.
A practical example
A fictional team checks a defined set of preparation and comparison questions monthly. It reports observed citation changes for that sample rather than claiming a universal “AI ranking.”
A decision checkpoint
Sampling should include unfavorable observations. If only successful citations are retained, the report cannot show coverage or change honestly. Keep a stable question set where practical and note changes in the product or method that could affect comparisons between reporting periods.
A mistake to avoid
Repeatedly adjusting prompts until the brand appears creates selection bias.
How to assess the result
Maintain a stable sample and explain its size, variation, and coverage limits.
Put the work in context
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, concerns visibility in AI-generated search answers. For PRSPCT, GEO means generative search, while local SEO refers separately to geographic discovery and business profiles.
Assess each search experience on its own terms. Record the query, product, date, location context where relevant, cited URL, and observed answer. A small manual sample is evidence of that sample, not a universal visibility score.
A common question
Does an AI citation count as a lead?
No. A citation is exposure; a valid inquiry is a separate event that must be measured independently.
