A/B testing a landing page: what to define first

An A/B test needs a clear hypothesis, appropriate allocation, a meaningful primary outcome, and a plan for interpreting uncertainty. Define these before looking for a favorable result.

PRSPCT diagram for A/B testing a landing page: what to define first: Hypothesis, Comparable exposure, Meaningful outcome.
Three points to consider: Hypothesis, Comparable exposure, Meaningful outcome.

A before-and-after edit is not automatically an A/B test.

Write the hypothesis

Identify the visitor problem and why the proposed change should affect the intended action.

Set the measurement plan

Choose the primary outcome, traffic allocation, sample considerations, and stopping approach.

Protect comparability

Avoid conflicting changes and inspect implementation for errors or unequal exposure.

A practical example

A fictional team tests two explanations of the same assessment offer with valid inquiries as the main outcome. It also checks qualification so a volume increase does not hide poorer fit.

A decision checkpoint

Use guardrail outcomes when an apparent win could reduce quality. More submissions may look favorable while producing fewer suitable conversations. Define how qualification and technical errors will be checked so the experiment does not optimize a superficial action at the expense of the business goal.

A mistake to avoid

Stopping as soon as one version looks ahead encourages unreliable conclusions.

How to assess the result

Interpret counts, uncertainty, lead quality, and implementation validity together.

Put the work in context

Conversion work should make the intended action easier for suitable visitors. Diagnose audience fit, message clarity, evidence, friction, and technical behavior before changing colors or adding more buttons.

Write the intended improvement and primary outcome before making changes. Keep a record of other releases and traffic shifts so that a before-and-after comparison is not mistaken for a controlled experiment.

A common question

Can a test prove a design works for every audience?

No. Results apply to the tested context and need cautious transfer elsewhere.
