Generative search visibility
Does llms.txt help a business rank in Google AI search?
Google’s current guidance says llms.txt is not needed for Google Search and does not improve or reduce search visibility. Prioritize useful public pages and technical access; maintain such a file only for a separate, identified use case.

A new file should solve a real integration need rather than serve as a visibility ritual.
Identify the consumer
Ask which system will read the file and what documented behavior it supports.
Protect core work
Ensure important content, canonical routes, links, and accurate facts are complete before optional files.
Document the purpose
If used elsewhere, maintain it consistently and do not promise a Google ranking benefit.
A practical example
A fictional business declines an unexplained llms.txt task and instead fixes a broken guide route. It would revisit the file if a specific supported integration required it.
A decision checkpoint
Evaluate optional technical tasks with a concrete question: who consumes this file, and what documented action follows? If no one can answer, the task should not displace useful page work. This keeps experimentation possible without confusing speculation with a required search implementation.
A mistake to avoid
Selling an optional file as a guaranteed AI visibility fix misstates its role.
How to assess the result
Judge any file by its documented consumer and function, not by speculative ranking claims.
Put the work in context
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, concerns visibility in AI-generated search answers. For PRSPCT, GEO means generative search, while local SEO refers separately to geographic discovery and business profiles.
Assess each search experience on its own terms. Record the query, product, date, location context where relevant, cited URL, and observed answer. A small manual sample is evidence of that sample, not a universal visibility score.
A common question
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. They have different purposes and adoption; neither should be treated as a universal instruction system for all AI services.
