Email automation

Email automation testing checklist before activation

Test automation entry, personalization, timing, links, exits, suppression, and failure handling before activation. Use representative test records rather than only sending one preview email.

PRSPCT diagram for Email automation testing checklist before activation: Cases, Observed behavior, Expected outcome.
Three points to consider: Cases, Observed behavior, Expected outcome.

Workflow correctness includes what should not send.

Build test cases

Include valid, missing-data, duplicate, opted-out, active-sales, and completed-action scenarios.

Inspect the logs

Confirm why each step sends, pauses, or exits.

Verify operational outcomes

Check resource delivery, reply routing, and downstream records.

A practical example

A fictional test catches a flow that restarts after every import. The re-entry condition is corrected before real subscribers are enrolled.

A decision checkpoint

Record expected non-events in the test plan. An opted-out test record should not receive a promotional step, and a completed booking should not receive another scheduling request. Verifying these absences is as important as confirming that the happy-path message appears.

A mistake to avoid

A perfect visual preview does not prove correct automation logic.

How to assess the result

Keep expected and observed results for critical paths and retest after material changes.

Put the work in context

Email automation executes a defined process; it does not decide whether that process is appropriate. Start with audience eligibility, trigger, message purpose, stopping conditions, and a responsible owner.

Test representative paths before activation, including missing data, duplicate events, replies, purchases where relevant, opt-outs, and failures. Keep a record of which event causes each send and how the automation is paused or retired.

A common question

Should workflows be tested after launch?

Yes, when triggers, data, integrations, or message logic change.
